Hertfordshire ASA Water Polo Activities
The Association promotes water polo activities not only for Hertfordshire clubs but also for those in the surrounding area that are within a reasonable travelling distance.
Currently there are two main competitions for men’s teams - the League competition and the handicap Knockout competition - that run between March and the 31st November each year.  We also try to promote a competition for junior players (under 19) but in recent years clubs have not had sufficient players to make this competition viable.  We have recently run a series of tournament for teams of players who are Under 14 years of age.  We are trying to promote the game of mini-polo! to young players and to clubs and schools that do not currently play the game.
Hertfordshire ASA teams have regularly taken part in games for all age groups from Under 16s to Over 50s.  They have competed in the ASA East Region’s Junior and Senior Tournaments since their inauguration and also participate in invitation tournaments for Under 16s, Under 19s, Over 40s and Over50s.
FINA Water Polo Rules 2009-2013

FINA has announced the new 2009-2013 rules which came into effect on 16th September 2009.  Click here to see the full text of the new rules.

Most the changes are just tidying up loose ends, though a a few that are worth noting.
• There is no tossing a coin for ends - the home team (or first shown on the programme) will wear white hats and start from the left of the table.
• A shot rebounding from a defender and going out at the side of the pool results in a free throw to the DEFENDING team.

There are a few important changes which all players and referees must be aware of.
• A player who is excluded for Misconduct (dressing roomed) must leave the competition area.
• Misconduct now includes "aggressive" play instead of "violent" play, and Brutality now includes "to play in a violent manner".  This lowers the threshold for Brutality and increases the sanction for violent play.  A player who is dressing roomed for Misconduct or Brutality will be shown a red card as well as the usual hand signal.
• The referee can issue a yellow card to a player who "persists in playing in an unsporting manner or engages in simulation".  Should the action continue, the referee will red card the player for Misconduct.

Competitions which started before 16th September 2009 (eg summer leagues and knockouts) should continue to use the old rules.  Competitions which start from now on should use the new rules.

Registered referees will receive a copy of the new rules as soon as the ASA has printed them.
